Cayman Airways is bringing back its weekly round-trip direct flight between Grand Cayman and Boston next month, but with a scaled down frequency compared to last year.
The flight returns the two weekends surrounding Thanksgiving in the United States, with a gap until three weekends around Christmas (mid December through early January). There is another gap in the schedule until mid February to mid April when the flight runs again.
According to Vice President Sales and Marketing with the national flag carrier, Richard Blake, from last year’s experience early December and January were very soft so this year they have scheduled the Boston flights around when the peak travel times are.
‘We have taken our learnings from last year and cut back to when the demand is really there,’ said Mr. Blake.
Round-trips will operate this high season between 17 and 25 November; 15 December and 6 January; and 16 February through 21 April on a 120-seat Boeing 737-300 jet.
Flights depart Grand Cayman Friday afternoon, arriving in Boston Friday evening, and depart Boston Saturday morning, arriving in Grand Cayman in the afternoon.
Last year the weekly flight operated from 18 November continually through the high season, with an additional Wednesday round-trip flight effective 21 December.
Although this is the third season the Boston route has been serviced by Cayman Airways, it is really the second full year, explained Mr. Blake, as the winter season in 2004 was disrupted by Hurricane Ivan, which damaged 90 per cent of buildings in Grand Cayman in September.
Also returning after a two month break for September and October, which are slow months for tourism, is the Chicago route.
There is a weekly round-trip flight effective 29 October leaving Grand Cayman on Saturday and departing Chicago on Sundays.
Additional roundtrip flights departing Grand Cayman on Wednesdays and departing Chicago on Thursdays are effective from 20 December through 4 January; and 7 February through 19 April.
