CAL, Walkers team up for recovery

Two organisations that are helping the Cayman Islands National Recovery Fund in its fundraising efforts recently went on a field trip to get a closer look at some of the housing projects now being repaired or rebuilt by the Fund.

On 10 October, representatives of Cayman Airways and the law firm of Walkers toured some of the NRF’s houses, along with the Fund’s executive director, Dr. Mark Laskin and director for marketing and development, Cynthia Arie.

The group visited four homes in George Town and West Bay that are slated for rebuilding and repairs and had a look at two new homes that were built for elderly residents, said a NRF press release.

The tour of NRF projects was part of an initiative by Walkers and Cayman Airways to further re-energise their fundraising efforts on behalf of the NRF.

In May this year Cayman Airways and Walkers launched their Change in the Air fundraising initiative through which Cayman Airways passengers could contribute towards a designated charity by placing donations in special Change in the Air envelopes available on the airline’s aircraft.

The Cayman Islands National Recovery Fund was the first charitable organisation designated by Walkers and Cayman Airways to benefit from the Change in the Air programme.

Walkers has been underwriting all the costs associated with the initiation and ongoing administration of the programme, while Cayman Airways has been informing passengers about the programme and assisting in the collection of the donations on behalf of the NRF.

‘The NRF welcomes donor support in all forms and we are pleased that these two organizations have taken further interest in the work we do and how we do it,’ noted the NRF’s Director for Marketing and Development, Cynthia Arie.

‘It is clear that both Walkers and Cayman Airways are showing their full commitment to the programme.’

Walkers’ Partner Julian Black added: ‘Walkers is pleased to partner with Cayman Airways on the Change in the Air programme, the first of its kind to be launched in the Cayman Islands. The initiative is a simple yet efficient way of benefiting the community by fundraising on behalf of local charities and, as such, we could not think of a more worthy and hardworking cause than the National Recovery Fund.’

Speaking on behalf of Cayman Airways, Don Hicks, Manager for US and International Sales reiterated the airline’s support for the NRF’s housing recovery programme. ‘We are extremely delighted with the resurgence of the Change in the Air programme. Our cooperation with Walkers, the developers of this campaign, has proven to be successful. This initiative is more than a donation, more than sponsorship support. It is a community service, and we are proud to be able to help in any capacity. The program carries a much broader message – you make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give.’

Since it began in 2004 in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan, the National Recovery Fund has repaired and restored 450 homes that were severely damaged and has assisted another 400 families with furniture and major appliances. While the NRF has received some funding from Government the bulk of its funds has been raised from private donations, the release said.
