Celebrating 250 years of Mozart for NRF

A fundraising concert for the National Recovery Fund celebrated 250 years of Mozart at the Grand Old House on Saturday.

The event saw pianist Vilma Garriaga – a regular performer at Grand Old House – opera singer Barbara Llanes, pianist Maria Victoria del Collado and violinist Alfredo Muñoz come together for the hour-long concert.

To kick-start the event, which was attended by Governor Stuart Jack, 10-year-old Madeleine Rowell and 11-year-old Sarah Fawkes, both students of Vilma Garriaga, delighted the audience with a short performance each.

During the concert, the audience enjoyed some of Mozart’s most popular pieces including well known Opera’s Arias such as Ah, ich fühl’s from Magic Flute, and Giunse al fin il momento from Wedding of Figaro.

Breaking away briefly from the Mozart theme, musicians Barbara Llanes, Alfredo Muñoz and Maria Victoria del Collado performed some traditional Cuban pieces, bringing an end to the night’s musical proceedings.

Following the concert, guests dined on a sumptuous three-course dinner. The meal had a distinctly Austrian flavour, with traditional dishes including braised veal with vegetable strudel and homemade butter spaetzle followed by crepes filled with apples, sultanas and sweet curds.

Waiters dressed in traditional 18th century garb, adding an additional frisson of excitement and authenticity to the night.

Martin Richter, Grand Old House general manager said: ‘I was amazed by the musicians’ performances, it really was one of the finest concerts I have been to and we were honoured to bring this level of entertainment to Cayman.

‘The whole event was perfect and guests were very impressed.’

Earlier during the day, the musicians and staff of Grand Old House visited the Pines residential home where they performed the concert in full for residents and their guests.

The fundraiser was thanks to the combined efforts of Grand Old House and UBS.
