Red Cross showcases supplies

The staff and a few members of the Red Cross Volunteer Disaster Management Team recently met with Dr. Barbara Carby from the National Emergency Management Agency office.

Representatives of NEMA were treated to a presentation by the team highlighting the organisation’s capacity to respond to disasters as well as some of its plans and ongoing endeavours in educating members of the public in disaster preparedness, said a Red Cross press release.

The presentation also included a tour of the Red Cross facilities – Shelter, Disaster Container and Mobile Command Post – and NEMA members were familiarized with some of the emergency supplies that have been pre-positioned throughout the island.

The Red Cross currently has more than 200 volunteers and has the capacity to respond to disasters within a very short time, the release said.

It continues to train these volunteers and the community to ensure that they are better prepared for disasters.

The objective of the Red Cross disaster management plan is to integrate and support NEMA in its overall responsibilities in disaster preparedness.

Aside from being recognized as a lead agency in disaster response, the Red Cross also plays a significant role in educating the youth of Cayman on HIV/AIDS through a peer education program, provides First Aid coverage to all community events, offers First Aid/CPR/AED training, and through its Thrift Shop, meets the needs of individuals requiring special assistance, having been referred by Government and community agencies.
