Coin commemorates Queen’s birthday

The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, in conjunction with the British Royal Mint, has issued a limited number of silver proof five-dollar Cayman Islands coins to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 80th birthday.

The coin is composed of .925 silver with .999 gold selective plating. The reverse features a design depicting the Queen presenting her 20-year old son Prince Charles with the insignia of his Principality and Earldom of Chester on 1July 1969 at Caernarfon Castles.

The obverse depicts Ian Rank-Broadly’s portrait of Her Majesty, highlighted in gold on the silver background.

A mintage limit of 25,000 pieces has been set for the coin.

Presented in a green, velvet-lined presentation case, each coin comes complete with a certificate of authenticity attesting to its proof quality, legal tender status and limited mintage.

The cost of the coins is CI$48.90 or US$60 each and they are now available from the office of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, located in the Elizabethan Square.

The Cayman Islands coin is part of an 80th birthday commemoration series for Her Majesty produced by the British Royal Mint and issued in various countries. Each coin depicts a different occasion from the monarch’s life.
