Pay hike for civil servants

Teachers attending the annual education conference Friday learned that in light of the rising cost of living, civil servants will be receiving a Cost of Living Adjustment pay hike.

Government’s last COLA award was for 2004, and no COLA award was paid for 2005.

To rectify this, Government is implementing a cost of living increase of seven per cent, effective 1 July, 2006, relating to the 2005 calendar year.

The pay raise will be implemented in the December, 2006 pay, and the remaining five months back pay will be paid in two instalments in the January and February 2007 pay.

A further cost of living increase of one per cent relating to the 2006 calendar year also comes into effect 1 January, 2007.

While making his comments on the 2007/08 Strategic Policy Statement in the Legislative Assembly Friday, Leader of Government Business Kurt Tibbetts said the retroactive portion of the pay raise will be funded out of operating surpluses. The pay raise going forward will be funded by Government expenditure savings, he said.

Mr. Tibbetts said the agreement for the pay raise was reached very quickly.

‘This Government, which was supposed to be indecisive, got together with members of the civil service and sorted it out in a day – and that’s never been done before,’ he said.
