The 2007 Rugby season got underway on Saturday with a blistering match between the players who will be eligible to represent Cayman August 15th through 26th, when they compete in the Caribbean Championships right here in Cayman and those who will not have been here the mandatory three years.
Things did not go well for the Cayman side conceding four tries in the first half and trailing by 24 – 3. Captain Brad Cowdroy led his side in the second half to an unbelievable come back scoring four tries of their own and walking away winner by two points 29 – 27.
It was particularly pleasing to see three of last years Academy and HSBC National U19 team that competed in Guyana, play for the men’s team. It is hoped that by August three or four more youngsters will have joined the squad from the Maples and Calder Rugby Academy after competing in the International Rugby Board Regional U19 World Cup Qualifiers here in Cayman in July.
Andrew Cuff, Josh Clark and Stuart McMillan all fared very well in the match and are expected to compete for starting places come August.
