Global warming not a myth

In big, bold letters Mr. Jerry Burton asks us to know the facts on global warming, then goes on to provide a skeptical opinion on whether, in fact, global warming exists.

One wonders why someone from Kansas should take the time to write a newspaper in the Cayman Islands. Nice of him to do so – but why?

The fact is letters such as this one are appearing in many newspapers, written by seemingly private individuals, when, in fact, many have turned out to be hired spin-doctors working for the petroleum industry.

Global warming is perhaps the wrong term to use to describe the phenomena appearing more and more frequently in the news, as I prefer climate change.

In the process of what should be more correctly termed climate change the natural balances of weather patterns alter. If viewed as a global issue, overall this results in less moderation and more frequent instances of severe and unpredictable weather.

So, as Mr. Burton walks his dogs in the cold Kansas winter and muses to us that perhaps global warming is a myth and he could use a few more degrees, he might better spend his time looking at the big picture. Most reasonable people realize there is more than adequate proof now that the planet is losing its ability to moderate temperatures.

But we can forgive him. After all he is from Kansas.
