I would like to write a word of support for Dave Martins’ letter headed ‘Conservation efforts admirable’ in the Caymanian Compass 28 February.
It is wonderful to hear that at least some Bluff land in Cayman Brac is being cleared using intelligent and strong men with machetes.
Here in Grand Cayman our remaining Bluff land – a highly important means of environmental delight as well as protection of various sorts – is daily being raped in the name of development by the hiring of enormous dinosaur-like machinery, to get ‘the job’ done quickly, but at a fearsome cost of which few, from the Planning Department to the politicians to the public, seem to be aware or bothered about.
This is an urgent matter to address (Please don’t ‘Go East’ without doing so!), and it is not insoluble: we have sinned against our physical heritage and against our future far too much already; and without true vision for our land, we will surely perish.
