Busy period at Cayman Islands Sailing Club

It is one of the busiest periods of the year for the Cayman Islands Sailing Club and the associated National Sailing Centre.

On Saturday (3 March), the Pete O’Neill fundraising dinner was held. Proceeds from the event will go towards the construction of the new Pete O’Neill Youth Training Centre adjacent to the clubhouse.

Mr O’Neill, a Butterfield Bank executive and a loyal friend and supporter of the Sailing Club, passed away last summer.

Also on Saturday, the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) School Sailing Circuit, which was launched in January, reached the race stage.

There are a series of races involving five local schools planned until the final regatta, an all-day event, is held on 24 March. For more information on the RBC School Sailing Circuit, visit www.schoolsailing.ky.

From 10-17 March, the National Sailing Centre will host a visiting team of Byte CII sailors from Canada.

The four sailors will be using the facilities for winter training and a warm up for the summer sailing season in Canada.

‘One of our goals is to establish our excellent sail training facility as a place for foreign teams to train and we are delighted that our first team is coming in March,’ said Cayman Islands Sailing Club Sailing Director Michael Weber. ‘The visiting team will also practice with our young sailors making it a very useful learning opportunity for our own team.’

Continuing the March excitement, the J/22 National Championships will be held at the Sailing Club on 17-18 March.

The Sailing Club also wishes to remind the public of two significant events in April – the traditional Easter regatta, held over the Easter weekend, and the Easter Sailing Camps from 2-5 and 10-13 April.

Space for the Sailing Camps is limited and anyone interested in reserving a space is encouraged to email club administrator Heather Bradley as soon as possible at [email protected].
