Project management conference set

A Project Management Conference and Workshop is planned for 2-4 April at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort.

The event features three international speakers who have many years of both practical and theoretical project management experience in industries ranging from construction, architecture and human resource management in both the public and private sectors.

The conference will be of interest to a wide range of Cayman professionals. Project managers will have an opportunity to learn new techniques, refresh some rusty areas and renew their commitment to professional project management best practices, said a press release said.

Project team members will be given tips and tricks that will make them more effective in working within their project environment. Clients who use project management services will gain insights as to what to expect from a professional project manager.

As well, Certified Professional Project Managers will earn valuable Professional Development Units which are required to maintain their certification without having to go off-island.

Patrick Cimolini, an Applications Project Manager with the Government’s Computer Services Department, is enthusiastic about the conference’s benefit to the country. In particular, he encourages young Caymanian professionals and students to attend.

‘It will be a great opportunity to get a taste for the profession and to network with Cayman’s project management community. At the conference, be sure to ask about how project management certifications like PMP and Prince 2 can enhance a resume by complementing existing certifications in engineering, accounting and law.’

The conference begins with a one-day workshop focused on getting the most out of your project team. In this workshop, attendees will utilise and practice using a variety of critical thinking and evaluation techniques that can be readily applied on projects big and small to improve overall effectiveness. This workshop is aimed at company directors, executive management, business management, project directors, project managers and project team members.

The second day is a conference titled Back to Basics II, a sequel to last year’s successful conference. This year’s conference topics include Project Planning (foundations of a successful project); Avoiding Scope Creep (keep your focus); Training for Success, Progress vs Outputs (where is your energy directed?); Team Dynamics (winning teams are made not born); and Transferring Project Outputs to Realise Benefits (do you handover correctly?).

The final day concentrates on basic scheduling techniques. The concepts of free float, negative float, contingency, theory of constraints, leads and lags, predecessors, Gantt, PERT, sequencing might seem like an alphabetical nightmare to many of us. This workshop is designed unravel some of the mysteries that are associated with project time scheduling so that the attendees can see how to effectively manage project activities and record progress.

The presenters, Lesley Rider, Roy Sargent and Professor Andrew Leicester, are a team of international project management practitioners who deliver world-class presentations on project management topics around the world.

With 75 years of combined experienced in consulting, construction, training, organisational development, information technology, change management and research in both the private and public sectors, they enjoy sharing their expertise and insights to all who are interested in improving their knowledge in the project management area.
