These days, it seems as if every few weeks there’s another round of some sinister virus or bug playing havoc with our health.
Here in Cayman, such a close-knit community, germs and infections seem to pass along the old marl road rather quickly. Given the fact that we are also given to the common habit of greeting friends with a hug, the spread of colds and bugs is easy.
Here are some healthy tips to help you maintain good health in spite of the sneezing around you.
• Rule #1. If sick, stay home from work. Employers may not take easily to this writer’s perspective, but given the inevitable transmission of disease through the workplace, the loss of manpower is greatly multiplied. Why not sacrifice the one to save the whole.
• Rule #1 should also apply to parents with sick children.
• See your doctor for advice and necessary intervention.
•Keep your immune system strong. This is imperative for disease prevention. This begins with nutrition, rest, activity and living a balanced lifestyle.
• Keep a polite distance from those who do show up with germ spreading sneezes and coughs.
• Practice hand-washing with diligence and smartness. Wash your hands often during the day and when moving from one task to another.
• Regularly clean commonly used equipment such as keyboard and telephones with an appropriate solution.
• When feeling the beginning symptoms of a cold, take steps to overcome it. This is variable for people. Some people find a good run or swim helps boost the metabolism and resolves the problem. For others, quiet, rest and hot herbal teas help.
• Stay boosted with Vitamin C and the all important B Vitamins
• Surrender to not feeling well and take quiet time to heal and recover. Work sometimes does have to wait.
