Today’s Editorial June 08: Ugland House investigation stupid

Talk about political posturing!

It seems a couple of United States senators want some American civil servants to come to the Cayman Islands and throw their weight around.

They want to investigate Ugland House.

They intimate US taxpayers are creating offshore business entities at Ugland solely to evade their US tax obligation.

What gall.

Imagine if one of our politicians or civil servants turned up in the United States proclaiming their plans to launch an investigation. They’d be laughed out of the country.

They’ve got a laundry list of things they plan to investigate; some of which are already a matter of public record.

We realize there’s a lot at stake in the upcoming 2008 elections in the United States, but points should not be made on the back of the Cayman Islands.

Our government and those in the finance industry have worked long and hard with the United States and the rest of the world to come up with law enforcement, regulatory and tax information exchanges to ensure Americans who seek to evade their taxes aren’t offered protection here.

To infer Maples and Calder is going out of its way to attract clients engaged in illegal tax evasion is just plain stupid.

And it’s insulting to that firm, our government and our country.

The two American senators say there are 12,748 companies registered at Ugland. What about the 200,000-plus companies registered in Delaware, right in their back yard, where tax breaks are given?

To quote from Matthew 7:5 ‘You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.’

We’re sure the civil servants will be treated with Caymanian grace when they arrive here.

But we have to wonder at the senators’ timing. First there’s the election thing next year.

But more importantly, it’s summer in the United States now.

What better place to spend a summer vacation on the US government’s dole than in the Cayman Islands. It’s been said the senators are on a fishing expedition. We suggest a charter fishing expedition.

Hey, a little sun and sand never hurt anyone.

Maybe the senators should join the civil servants for a free rid.
