Architect Doak makes Maco

Cayman-based architect and imaginer John Doak is featured in the current issue of Maco magazine, a leading publication on architecture, cuisine and lifestyle in the Caribbean region.

The seven-page article recounts Doak’s experiences in the Caribbean since his arrival in 1979 and features a number of his designs for houses and office buildings in the Cayman Islands.

Maco publisher and Editor-in-chief Neysha Sooden, who visited Cayman last February as part of an island-hopping visit to territories not yet covered by her magazine, met up with Doak after hearing of his bespoke designs.

She noted ‘This Scottish born architect (whose accent is unmistakeable!) had made Cayman his home and designed some of the country’s most intriguing dwellings. He has devoted much of his career to celebrating Cayman islands style and since Ivan has improved his designs to become more hurricane resistant.’

Doak enjoys the challenge of designing single family homes. He has developed a reputation for what he describes as pavilionised estate residences.

‘Rather than one monolithic building the house comprises a series of pavilions interconnected by verandas and cloistered courtyards,’ he explains.

Outside of the Cayman Islands Doak’s signature architecture has been commissioned by clients in St. Kitts, Jamaica, Cuba, BVI, Antigua, Turks and Caicos, Bahamas as well as in the US and Europe. Through his newly formed design firm, John Doak Architecture, he looks forward to offering that island-wide knowledge and experience to future clients.

Among his recently competed designs is Silver reef, a 64-unit resort and commercial centre at Frigate Bay in St. Kitts, which was launched in London recently. Plans are also on the drawing board for three boutique resorts proposed for Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands.
