The Chamber of Commerce began its Education Month in June by organising Career Awareness visits to businesses and government departments for Year 11 students at Cayman Prep and High School and Triple C School.
The visits enabled students to meet with business representatives from different industry sectors.
The goal of the programme is to stimulate interest among the students about various careers opportunities that are available locally and those that they may not have considered previously, states a press release.
The Cayman Prep and High School students visited Butterfield Bank on 1 June. The students learned about the operations of the bank from senior department representatives. A second group of students toured the George Town Hospital and learned about traditional and non-traditional career opportunities in departments such as the financial services and forensic science divisions.
The management of the Hyatt Regency Resort treated the students to a complimentary lunch and a tour of the facilities. Students were able to ask questions about the various career opportunities that are available in the hospitality field.
In the afternoon, the students visited CITN and Cayman 27 and the law firm, Walkers.
They toured Walkers and were informed about the different career paths that exist in one of Cayman’s largest law firms.
In the morning of Tuesday, 5 June, Triple C students were able to visit banking, insurance and trust professionals at Cayman National and some students were able to try their DJ skills at dms Broadcasting. Lunch was provided at Sunshine Suites where they were also welcomed by the management and staff and informed about career opportunities in the hospitality field.
The students’ afternoon visits included a trip to Cable & Wireless’s One Technology Place and Scotiabank & Trust. During the visit to C&W, the students learned about the different career opportunities that exist in the telecommunications and communications field. The staff of Scotiabank & Trust welcomed the students and introduced them to the division leaders who operate the bank and trust company. They learned about the intricacies of operating a financial institution and the opportunities that exist in all departments.
Sunshine Suites Managing Director Mr. Frank Givens and Director of Sales Mrs. Nadia Hardie expressed their satisfaction with the Career Awareness visit from Triple C. They led the Triple C students around the hotel, piquing the students’ interest in the hospitality industry. ‘We are delighted to be a part of the Chamber’s Career Awareness Visits. The students we met today were eager to learn about our hotel and seemed very interested in finding out about hospitality and customer service. I think we may have a few applicants for summer jobs!’ said Mrs. Hardie.
Career Awareness visits for John Gray High School and St. Ignatius Catholic School will take place at the end of June.
