Multiplicty opens tonight

From jazz, ballet, tap and modern, Multiplicity will have something for all dance lovers.

The dance show extravaganza, which opens tonight at the Harquail Theatre for a one-week one, features members of Miss Jackie’s School of Dance, as well as past students.

Split into three suites, the production will kick-off with a number of ballet performances, with senior members of the dance school dancing en pointe. The suite will include performances to the popular classical piece Blue Danube, as well as lighter arrangements such as Singing in the Rain. The ballet segment will also include a selection of ballet compositions showcasing various techniques.

‘The ballet suite is very classical, beautiful and romantic,’ said Jackie Balls, owner of the dance school and responsible for most of the choreography.

A performance by soprano singer Valerie Cobb will lead into the gospel suite, featuring a mixture of lyrical, contemporary and spiritual dance pieces. The gospel suite will be performed by the Magnificat Club; a group of students from the school which meet once a week to read scripture, pray and dance.

Broadway and Beyond will close the production, featuring many popular Broadway hits, including Frank Sonatra’s Come Fly With Me and The Show Must Go On, from the musical Moulin Rouge.

‘The broadway suite is very fast moving and upbeat. This is going to get everyone tapping their feet,’ Ms Jackie said.

Broadway and Beyond will include a number of tap performances, choreographed by dance instructor Linda Rayner, as well as freestyle dances and a show stopping number called ‘Cayman Stomp’.

Some eight months in the making, Multiplicity will feature over 100 dancers aged from four to 40-years-old.

The two-hour show will showcase an array of glitzy, dazzling costumes, ordered especially for the production, custom-made in New York.

Miss Jackie opened the dance school in 1973 and last staged a production in 2003.

‘This is going to be a great family show, which will be enjoyed by all,’ Ms Jackie said.

Production dates are 15, 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24 June at 7pm, Sundays at 4pm. Tickets, available from Petique at Pasadora Place, are $18, $10 for children under 10. Call 949-7296 for further details.
