In the Touch of Elegance under-12 Basketball League Boys Division, the Cinderella team, Prospect Primary School, took on the Defending Champions, Red Bay Primary. last Saturday at Kings Sports Center.
In their previous meeting, Red Bay defeated Prospect 28-15 in an intense match and no one expected anything less for this encounter. Both teams came out with stifling defensive pressure that hindered each other from even making it to the basket most times, but Jessie Greenfield of Red Bay scored his team’s only 6 points of the first quarter. The second quarter saw much more offensive action as both teams turned up the heat. For Prospect it was David James and Cody Wright doing most of the damage while Adrian Stewart and Malic McDonald put on a show for the Red bay fans.
Prospect seemed to have the better defence, coming up with 31 steals as opposed to Red Bay’s 14; but Red Bay simply had better offensive execution and pulled ahead slowly each quarter making it impossible for the valiant Prospect to catch them. Final Score 36-20 in favour of Red Bay Primary who retain their Title for a second straight year.
In the Girls Division, Red Bay Primary Took on Truth For Youth School, who were the regular season champions and fans, would see a final that had everyone on the edges of their seats.
Red Bay came out with a bang and quickly registered the game’s first five points, all coming from Janis Wright who cleaned the boards for Red Bay. But along came a Nixon for Truth for Youth, Latorae Nixon. Latorae is arguably the best scorer in her division and she showed the crowd why; weaving and cutting through the Red Bay defence and finishing strong. Nixon scored 8 of the first 10 truth for Youth Points. But Red Bay came storming back in the second quarter behind Hanna Peralta who provided an offensive spark off the bench. But Truth for Youth struggled during the second quarter and was able to register only 2 points thanks to Estephanie Mencia.
It was a roller coaster game which made the 3rd quarter Truth for Youth’s turn. Latorae Nixon and Selena Smith teamed up for an 11 point quarter to give Truth For Youth the Lead once again going into the 4th with Championship hopes in their eyes. But Red Bay decided they were not going down quietly! Leillie Powell, Janis Wright and Brandy Dixon decided to take the game into their own hands and carry their team ahead with only 6 seconds to go on a basket from Wright.
But Truth for Youth found themselves down by one point and at the free-throw line with an opportunity to win or send the game into overtime. But unfortunately, the rim was unkind to Truth for Youth and with a final shot at the basket also barely missing its mark, It was Red Bay Primary that emerged victorious when the smoke cleared. Final Score 31-30.
