A colourful entry by Ms. Giulia Latini has been chosen as the winner of the recent Pan Am Games pin design competition. The winning image features a Cayman catboat sailing against a sunset. It won the artist a prize of two tickets to any Cayman Airways destination.
The various sporting event pins are favourite souvenir items at these major sporting events, and are often traded and collected by participants and fans alike. The Cayman Islands’ pins have been very popular, especially the Cayman parrot design by artist Wray Banker, that was used in the Commonwealth Games in Australia.
The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CIOC) is organizing local participation of some 20 local athletes in this event, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in July. During this major regional event, many local athletes will attempt to pre-qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Immediately before the Pan Am meet will be the NatWest Island Games XII in Rhodes, Greece, with 14 different sports being staged simultaneously.
The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee is officially recognized as the National Organizing Committee (NOC) for major sporting events. As such, it is responsible for all Cayman Islands teams which participate in multi-sport events regionally and internationally. The CIOC membership reflects the core of local sports, including active participants and promoters of sailing, athletics, swimming, basketball and other sports. (CIOC)
