For those tired of being a singleton, a new event heralds some hope for those still searching for ‘the one’.
Speed dating – a dating phenomenon popularised by hit TV shows such as Sex and the City – is being held at Britannia Restaurant and Bar, Thursday, 9 August.
The premise is simple. Up to 32 participants – 16 men and 16 women – ‘date’ each other, with four minutes on each ‘date’ to impress.
Women are allocated a table; the men rotate round. A bell signals the end of each date, the process being complete when all the men have dated all the women.
Each participant will be allocated a number and participants can let organisers know if they are interested in anyone. Organisers will then pass on contact details, with permission.
The event is ideal for busy professionals whose hectic lives allow little time to find love, offering up to 16 dates in just one night.
The event kicks off at 7pm with cocktails – naturally themed for the night, choose from ‘The Matchmaker’ or ‘The Big O’ – followed by dating at 8pm in the upstairs lounge.
Organiser Marina Flynn, food and beverage manager at the Hyatt, said Britannia offers the ideal location. Firstly, it’s tucked away from the main drag and the split-level venue offers more privacy for daters, away from prying eyes.
Marina came up with the idea of hosting the night after watching an episode of Sex and the City.
‘I have so many friends who are single, and everyone asks the same question. Where do you go on island to meet someone? I just felt it was needed on Cayman and thought it would be a really cool thing to do.’
Marina is urging groups of friends to come along and is insisting the night is all about fun.
‘Speed dating is all in the name of fun. If you meet someone that’s fantastic. If you don’t, you have had a fun night out. It’s all about meeting new people and great conversation,’ Marina said.
The event will be hosted by Cayman’s resident ‘Love Matchmaker’, DJ Aldo of Kiss FM, and will include live entertainment with DJ Craig of One World Entertainment spinning the tunes.
If you’re a little shy about joining in, Marina is urging people to come along for the cocktail reception.
‘Just because you attend the cocktail reception doesn’t mean you are committed. People are welcome to just come along and see what it is all about.’
The event is free to attend and complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be served. A light snack menu will also be available, along with a cash bar.
Participant registration and rules will be provided on the evening, or can be obtained in advance. Email [email protected] or call 745-4655. Participants must be 21 years and over and single!
