Farmer’s market to continue weekly

Vendors at Grand Cayman’s new farmer’s market, Market at the Grounds, have resolved to continue to the market on a weekly basis.

They say they have plenty of produce to sustain a weekly market at Stack Watler Agricultural Pavilion, despite some suffering heavy banana and plantain crop losses from Hurricane Dean. The decision was taken at a meeting of market vendors last week.

Agriculture Department Marketing Coordinator Brian Crichlow said there would be at least eight produce vendors in attendance at this Saturday’s market with a wide range of produce.

This is in addition to arts and crafts, nursery stalls with locally propagated plants, seafood vendors and people selling prepared foods and drinks, he added.

Hurricane Dean came just one week after Market at the Grounds made an impressive debut on 11 August, with large crowds enjoying a festive atmosphere. Mr. Crichlow said crowd and vendor numbers were steadily rising again after the disruption of Dean.

‘In time, we expect this market to go from strength to strength and to provide an important opportunity to both farmers and backyard farmers in the Cayman Islands,’ Mr. Crichlow said.
