Olive Miller, whose eyesight is failing due to macular degeneration, is greatly benefiting from five low vision aids.
This is due to the generosity of the Lions Club of Grand Cayman and the Prep Department of Cayman Prep & High School who covered the cost of the trip to Miami and the consultation at Bascomb & Palmer Eye Institute Low Vision Clinic.
They also covered the cost of a hand magnifier, glasses for knitting and hand work, a flourescent lamp, a ‘Quik Look’ camera for checking supermarket labels and state-of-the-art NEO (AV100) video equipment which projects objects onto a TV screen for reading, writing, crosswords and more.
‘As sight is the main programme of Lions we are very happy that we were able to partner with the students of the Cayman Prep School and Pink Ladies to assist Mrs. Miller who has given – and continues to give – to our community,’ Debbie Ebanks, 2nd Vice President of the Lions Club of Grand Cayman, said in a press release.
‘I would especially like to commend the students in their efforts and would ask parents, teachers and other stakeholders to encourage our children at such a young age not only to be mindful of the needs of others but the choices they make as sight is a vital sense needed in our lives.’
Mrs. Miller expressed sincere thanks for the valuable aids to the Lions Club of Grand Cayman and the Cayman Prep School children and staff. She also thanked Dr. Mani, who made the arrangements, and the Pink Ladies, who advanced the funds to make all this possible, and donated a new flat screen TV.
