Bring on the Dutch master

Common sense looks like it will soon be restored at Stamford Bridge with the unveiling of Marco van Basten as the long-term proper manager of Chelsea.

No Blues fan with a semblance of savvy can possibly envisage similar success under Avram Grant as they enjoyed in three years of Mourinho rule. Grant has neither the ability nor charisma to win over the sceptical players and supporters. Of all the Grants out there they could have picked Richard E, Hugh, Grant Mitchell (hard-nut soap character), or even Cary.

Van Basten won everything but the World Cup as a player, including European Championships, European Cup (twice), World Footballer of the Year, European Footballer of the Year (three times)… Proper t’ings. My only reservation is that he hasn’t much club experience although he’s doing well as the Dutch national coach. A short stint as reserve team coach at Ajax is not a complete foundation. At least he’ll have the respect of the players. There can’t be many ex-pros around that they’re in awe of but he’s definitely in the pantheon league. Can’t be any worse than you know who.

All Chelsea need now is for Ronaldinho to confirm he’s joining for this gruesome episode to finish cheerily.

Chelsea should see off Fulham at home tomorrow and could pull back some points as the other big names are all away. Man Utd are at Birmingham, Liverpool go to Wigan and high flying Arsenal cross town to face West Ham. Best match of the weekend could be Man City at home to Newcastle. Both have started well with fine, entertaining football. Who would have predicted that of Sven and Big Sam?
