KPMG to sponsor international sailing regatta

Accounting firm KPMG in the Cayman Islands has been confirmed as the title sponsor for the KPMG J/22 International Regatta, which will be held at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club (CISC) in February 2008.

The event will bring teams from the UK, two from the United States, one from Jamaica and a joint Puerto Rico/Italy outfit to take on the pride of the Cayman Islands.

‘KPMG is proud to once again support this sporting event,’ said Simon Whicker, a partner at KPMG, which also sponsored the inaugural J/22 International Regatta in 2005. ‘We fully understand the importance of bringing international exposure to the Cayman Islands in this sport that endorses the cultural heritage of the islands and so we are delighted to back the regatta for a second time.’

The other major sponsor confirmed to date is Kirk Freeport.

The regatta will be held in North Sound over four days in February 2008. The boats to be used are J22s, with a maximum of four crew weighing no more than 705 pounds. All of the boats will be generously donated by local J22 owners.

There will be three teams representing Cayman. Qualifying rounds have been held this year and will continue into early 2008, with one of the highest-ranked teams a group of teenage sailors who are producing results that has amazed everyone at the CISC.

The race schedule is as follows. On Friday 15 February 2008, there will be registration followed by a practice race at 4pm. On Saturday 16 February, Sunday 17 February and Monday 18 February 2008, there will be three races daily from noon.

The regatta will also coincide with a busy social schedule. On Thursday 14 February from 6:30pm-8pm, an opening reception will be hosted by His Excellency the Governor, Mr Stuart Jack, and his wife, Mrs Mariko Jack, at Government House. The dress code will be smart casual.

The regatta will be preceded by a special KPMG-sponsored Youth Day, where local school children will have an opportunity to learn the basics of sailing.

There will also be social events on the evenings following the racing before the official prizegiving dinner, hosted by CISC Commodore Mr Andrew Moon, at 7:30pm on Monday 18 February.
