The cricket season has seamlessly begun following another busy one last year that went all the up to the festive season.
The association welcomed new team University College of the Cayman Islands in the Money Express Division 2. UCCI announced their arrival on Saturday with a comprehensive victory over JJ’s. Boasting several quality youngsters who are attending the university – Ricardo Roach, Ramon Sealy and Zachary McLaughlin – the rest of the team comprised of staff members and other students, UCCI looks like one to follow this season.
Former West Indies fast bowler turned commentator Ian Bishop is on the rock. As the Cayman Islands Stanford 20/20 Legend, Bishop is here to give his expert assistance to Cayman’s best. Having arrived late Saturday he wasted no time and spent Sunday at the Smith Road Oval observing players. He had an even closer look as an umpire during the first match. Trinidadian Bishop conducted two practice sessions at the Smith Road Oval on Monday and Tuesday.
Cayman’s preparations for the Stanford 20/20 tournament is in its final stages. They play St Lucia on 25 January in Antigua and assuming they win, face Trinidad and Tobago next. On Sunday at the Smith Road Oval the Cable & Wireless Cayman team defeated Money Express Cayman and ESSO Cayman in two matches. Continuing from where he left off last season teenager Ramon Sealy batted brilliantly scored 62 runs in 40 balls in one game. Sealy, 16, matured impressively last year. Joining in the act and showing superb form were Steve Gordon and Keniel Irving.
Cayman 20/20 International is back with another guest country, British Virgin Islands playing in six matches this weekend. Matches shall be played at Jimmy Powell Oval and Smith Road Oval.
