Deloitte strengthens management team

Deloitte has recently strengthened its management team by bringing on top talent within the Enterprise Risk Services and Financial Advisory Services departments.

Over the past six years, the ERS group of Deloitte has grown significantly by providing Caribbean based clients with a range of services including risk and security management, control assurance, internal audit, business continuity planning, and disaster recovery services.

Recently, the ERS group has expanded their core team to assist in serving the ever expanding risk services market.

Ms Lise Baril and Mr. Stefan DuChene join the fast growing ERS group under the direction of Mr. Jeremy Smith.

Commenting on the recent additions to the team, Mr. Jeremy Smith, Partner responsible for the ERS practice for Deloitte in the Caribbean highlighted, ‘We are very pleased to have Lise and Stefan rejoin our team in Cayman. Having team members with their level of experience and expertise will be a tremendous benefit to our current and future client base both locally and regionally. We work closely with our clients to address and manage risk and regulatory issues facing the financial services industry to ensure our clients’ needs are fully serviced by the most talented professionals.’

Ms Baril is an ERS manager who recently returned to Deloitte Cayman to manage the Control Assurance service line, which offers services such as SAS 70 reviews, Contract Risk Compliance assessments, IT Governance consulting, COBIT and ITIL consulting, and IT internal audits, states a press release.

In her role, Ms. Baril will be focused on the fund and banking industries in Cayman as well as regionally across the Caribbean. Lise started her career with the Deloitte Cayman ERS group after graduating from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 2004. After spending a year in Cayman, Lise relocated to the Canadian practice in Toronto where she specialised in SAS70 examinations, Sarbanes-Oxley 404 Compliance, integrated external audits and IT internal control reviews and consulting. Lise is a Certified Information Systems Auditor as well as a Certified Internal Auditor and has worked with some of Canada’s largest financial institutions and retail clients.

Mr. DuChene, a Chartered Accountant, is a senior manager with Deloitte in the Cayman Islands specialising in both ERS and FAS. In his ERS role, Mr. DuChene will lead the Control Assurance and Internal Audit service offerings. With over 10 years of professional services experience, Mr. DuChene has worked extensively in providing clients with SAS 70 examinations, Contract Risk Compliance assessments, Internal Audit reviews and Sarbanes-Oxley 404 compliance. Additionally, Mr. DuChene is a key member of the Deloitte Financial Advisory practise, specialising in contentious liquidations and forensic investigations. For the last three years, Stefan has been working in the forensic accounting practice of Deloitte in Calgary where he has been involved in the administration of the liquidation of several manufacturing and resource companies.

He also led the fraud investigation on a multi-million dollar company after it was put into liquidation. Prior to this, Stefan worked for the Deloitte Cayman Islands practice where he was involved extensively in the liquidation of a large financial institution. Stefan’s clients have included investment advisory firms, fund-of-funds, banks, oil & gas exploration and production companies, and manufacturing companies.

Ross Higginson joined the Deloitte Cayman FAS practice in October 2007 as Manager of the Voluntary Liquidation department. Ross has specialised in insolvency for over 7 years in the United Kingdom, spending the last two years as a manager specialising in solvent liquidations, corporate simplification and reorganisation work with another Big 4 firm. Since starting with Deloitte, Ross has overseen the voluntary liquidation of over 40 Cayman entities from the commencement of the liquidation to dissolution and has also been involved in contentious liquidation assignments.

The FAS group within Deloitte provides local and international clients with a range of services including Insolvency, Corporate Restructuring, Dispute Consulting and Forensic Accounting Services. Stuart Sybersma, the Partner in charge of the FAS department, noted ‘in a period of relative instability in the financial markets, having Stefan and Ross join us is a valuable addition to the team as their extensive insolvency experience provides greater support in what is likely to prove an increasingly busy arena. The FAS team is now even better equipped to assist clients who are undergoing financial difficulties, whether it be in an advisory capacity to assist in preventing insolvency, or to provide insolvency services once there is no other option. Stefan has assumed an immediate leadership role in the liquidation of one of our largest ongoing contentious liquidations and forensic investigations, and we are excited to have him return to our local practice after having gained valuable experience with Deloitte in Canada. Ross will provide experienced oversight of the growing non-contentious voluntary liquidation service line, which provides a formal process to dissolve entities that are no longer required, in a professional, transparent process that ensures no surprises for stakeholders.’
