Filipino champs to be crowned

Local Filipino volleyball is serving up an exciting end to its season.

This Sunday will see the championship game in the Filipino Volleyball League. At 8pm Gel will battle Corona at the airport park.

Both teams come into the finals with solid wins in the semi-finals. Gel took down Louie and Jaspher (L and J) while Corona beat You Got Serve (YGS).

Among the fanfare scheduled for the event will be a special ritual for all participating teams during the playoffs. This will include trophies being awarded for each team and medals for every player from the champions to the third runner-up.

Sunday’s action follows on the heels of last week’s runner-up title game between L and J and YGS. The game took place at 8pm at the airport park.

The winner of the game would finish second runner-up and the loser would be third runner-up.

The match had all the vibes of a tight elimination match. Filipino band Liquidsky was on hand blasting out punk rock while fans sat nervously on the sidelines occasionally munching Filipino food.

From the moment the whistle blew L and J came to play. L and J simply took it to YGS and never looked back. With focused serves, furious spikes and strategic blocks L and J seemed determined to win. YGS refused to go away as their frantic play helped make an intense game.

Ultimately the 200 persons in attendance got what they wanted as L and J emerged the winners. The crowd-favourites won in three straight sets in the best-of-five finale.

Both squads were coming off outstanding playoff performances. In spite of a seventh place finish in the regular season L and J beat second-seeded Caybrew in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile last place YGS pulled off a huge upset over regular season champions Cayfil Power.

Next up for Filipino volleyball will be the annual awards ceremony. Various trophies are slated to be given out including most valuable player.
