The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation officially installed its new board following an extraordinary general meeting held on 31 Jan.

The election proceedings were monitored by Mushtaque Mohammed, the president of Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association and vice president of the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation, known as NORCECA.

Mohammed attended as an official observer, overseeing the proceedings “to ensure they were carried out in accordance with good governance practices” outlined a NORCECA press release.

Among the elected individuals to serve on the Executive Committee and Board of Administration of the federation is Shakeina Bush, who has been appointed CIVF’s president.

In the release, NORCECA noted that her appointment “highlights the growing strength of women’s leadership in Caribbean volleyball.”

“This achievement is underscored at the regional level, as the … [CAZOVA] now boasts eight women presidents among its fourteen national federations – an inspiring testament to progress, inclusivity, and excellence in sport governance,” the release added.

Furthermore, Deajra Tulloch was elected as vice president, joined by Troy Alleyne as secretary and Casey Santamaria as treasurer.

The Board of Administration also welcomed Andrae Bailey, Jossannah Smith and Shaela Rae as elected members.

While most leadership roles were filled, two positions on the board remain vacant.

“The newly elected President issued a call for interested members to put themselves forward over the following three-week period. A number of individuals have since expressed interest and will be considered for appointment, with final selections to be confirmed at a later date,” said the release.

Former federation president Kennedy McGowan, who stepped down late last year for personal reasons, was in attendance to witness the transition.

McGowan “extended his congratulations to the newly elected Board and encouraged all members to work collaboratively in the best interests of the sport, toward the sustained growth and success of volleyball in the Cayman Islands.”

Mohammed congratulated the new board on behalf of NORCECA’s President Cristobal Marte Hoffiz and offered the ongoing support of the Institutions of NORCECA and CAZOVA to the newly elected board of CIVF. He also encouraged them to keep the ball flying in the Cayman Islands and work “together as one” which are the watchwords of International Volleyball Federation.

Under the current CIVF’s constitution, this board is set to serve a four-year term. Their tenure will conclude in 2028, coinciding with the cycle of the Summer Olympic Games, at which time a new board will have the opportunity to be elected by the membership, the release noted.
