Horse lover Tricia shows how to be resourceful

Cayman’s horse lovers can now go to a one-stop shop and get as much information they need on all things equestrian.

That’s because an equestrian resource corner has just opened, at Pet Pros, near Grand Harbour.

It is enthusiastically run in her spare time by celebrated horsewoman Tricia Sybersma and her teenage daughter Kellie.

The Cayman Islands Resource Centre was borne out of the need to provide greater information and materials to people who want to learn more about horses. There are a lot of them in Cayman, it seems, and the numbers are growing rapidly.

Sybersma favours the Parelli Natural Horsemanship method of training horses. She brought over Parelli instructor Dan Halladay a few months ago from Canada for master classes which were well received.

Parelli are her biggest donators so far. They have donated 10 DVDs for the opening of the resource corner which addresses basic horsemanship for either discipline, Western or English.

Sybersma said: ‘June 4 was our grand opening and right now we have 40 DVDs out without advertising. So the word is spreading. Right now a lot of people are allowed only one DVD a week until we have copies.

‘The feedback has been very positive. I’ve had people approach me about information they wanted carrying, including the Pony Club out of the UK.

‘I’m in the process of receiving their material for children here. I’d like to expand to carry information that will be valuable for all the different interests on the island.’

Sybersma is a member of the Cayman Islands Equestrian Federation but she emphasises that anyone is allowed to use the resource centre which is just a work surface in a corner of Pets Corner and is basically equipped.

‘We were aware of the need for this. We would eventually like to have a photo copier, a portable DVD player and materials for kids who might be doing projects about horses at school for things like anatomy and horse health. They can come here as an alternative for getting information for their studies and also for people studying privately.’

Andrew McLaughlin, Pet Pros owner, has generously given Sybersma the corner and she is extremely thankful. ‘Andrew’s allowed me to use this space to see where it’s going to go which was a wonderful gift to us because we’re completely unfunded.

‘So without this opportunity this completely wouldn’t have got off the ground.’

Its official title is actually Savvy in the Sun Resource Corner. Savvy in the Sun is the name of a website that promotes an online community of people interested in Parelli Natural Horsemanship mostly in the Cayman Islands, Canada and Bermuda.

The use of the Resource Corner is free and to register fill out the registration sheet provided at the desk.

To sign out a DVD just fill out the required information in the sign out book.

Besides Parelli, the DVDs have been donated by Don and Randee Halladay, Karen Rohlf, David Fryer, Savvy in the Sun and FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale). Don Halladay’s next visit is in November.

The Resource Corner also provides an article of the month with copies available to take free.

It has bulletin board to use for notices and announcements and information.
