Gel are the new champions of the Filipino Volleyball League.
On Sunday Gel took down finalist Corona in five sets. Gel won the fifth and deciding set by 10 points as they posted 25 points to Corona’s 15 points.
The match saw plenty of spikes and blocks as both teams were not prepared to surrender an inch. In the end Gel were the stronger team as captain Marvin Cruz led a solid defensive effort against a determined attack featuring the likes of Jerry Avendano.
Fans spread across the airport park cheered loudly for their teams. From the start of the match at 8pm they voiced their support through to the awards ceremony by night’s end.
Like most sports finals, this one had its share of controversy. Going into the match, members of the Corona squad claimed they had an edge. Surprisingly, when the whistle blew to begin the game only six players were present and the team played without any substitutes.
For Gel the title marks the triumphant end to a one and a half month season. The squad fought their way to the top ahead of 10 teams who signed up for the regular season.
After the match there was a brief awards ceremony. The top four teams and their players all received trophies and medals. Earlier this month, Louie and Jaspher along with You Got Served claimed third and fourth place respectively.
The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the MVP trophies. Gel swept both awards as Marvin Cruz won the title for the men while Jane Gaetos won for the women.
After the ceremony the teams performed a customary farewell ritual.
According to the Filipino Volleyball League committee the night was ‘an amazing gathering that showcased unity and sportsmanship. The teams will now part ways looking forward to next year’
The committee is headed by the JA1 Community Service Special Project of the JA1 Church.
The committee also thanked the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation, headed by President Noel Williams, for their endless support.
