Fraud examiners host seminar

Chapter 123 of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners is hosting a half-day symposium that looks at the regulatory and legal duties and obligations of directors, and the resulting accountability and liability that arises from these duties and obligations.

The session will be held Wednesday, 21 October, at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort.

The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners is the world’s premier provider of anti-fraud training and education, with 45,000 members worldwide.

The keynote presenter is Mr. Michael Watson, director of Enforcement of the Ontario Securities Commission. Mr. Watson will speak on his experiences as the principal person in the fraud case involving Bre-X and the prosecution of Mr. John Felderhof.

In addition to Mr. Watson, Mr. Seamus Andrew, managing partner of international law firm Simmons Cooper Andrew, will look at directors’ accountability in Cayman and the impact of indemnities.

Mr. RJ Berry, head of compliance of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, will explain the Cayman regulator’s expectations of directors and what actions may be taken if directors step out of line.

Kenneth Krys, acting president for the local chapter of Association of Certified Fraud Examiners commented, ‘We are delighted to have such qualified presenters on a very topical issue given the current economic environment. Professionals who act as directors, attorneys who provide advice to directors and fraud investigators who inquire into their duties and obligations will find this symposium worthwhile in attending’.

The symposium is open to ACFE members and to the general public. Cost to ACFE Members and employees of Government organisations is $125 and $150 for non-members. Those interested in attending should contact Russell Smith on 946-0820, fax, 946-0864 or email at [email protected] by no later than 10 October.

As seating is limited, early responses are encouraged.
