Joan Wilson (née Watler) celebrated her 74th birthday in style this past Wednesday.
The local poet launched her first collection of ‘poems and ponderings’ with a reading at Books & Books in Camana Bay on 10 September, which was also her birthday.
Mrs. Wilson, composed and calm, approached the podium with a friendly smile and read several of her poems to the crowd gathered.
In her soothing Caymanian tones, Mrs. Wilson recounted experiences spanning from the personal with ‘The Fall’ (a humorous recount of her recent fall while picking the fruit from an avocado tree) to the historical with ‘Quincentennial Cayman’ (a wonderfully informative poem written in celebration of Cayman’s Quincentennial year in 2003).
The collection is a valuable addition to a collection of works of Cayman’s history, as it details a timeline of life in Cayman from a personal perspective.
The majority of poems are humorous and all have a wonderful rhyming meter to them that is not dissimilar to the lilting beat of rhythms heard in other Caribbean art forms.
‘Buried Treasures of Cayman – My Memories’ ($19.95, Magna Carta Productions) is available at Books & Books at Camana Bay and Hobbies & Books. A number of autographed copies are still available for sale.
