It’s all on the line and the date has been set. King’s Sports Centre will see one of the biggest match-ups in WestTel five-a-side championship history.
At 7pm on Monday 6 October No.1 RCC Strikers will battle No.2 BrittHay Warriors for the title.
This past Monday’s WestTel semi-final playoffs matches were everything expected.
Game 1 of the evening saw the RCC Strikers powerhouse team take on D1 leading scorer Ben Marler and the CML Claymores.
The Claymores put up a great fight, with goals by Marler and Kris McGuire, but could not hold onto a two goal lead late in the game. The Strikers, who carry great depth, put up three riveting late game goals by scorers Stan Clarke, Junior Fisher and Floyd McKenzie.
The second match up of the evening took place between No.2 BrittHay Warriors and No.3 Burger King and was an exciting back and forth game. The final outcome would be decided by way of penalty kicks.
The Warriors, down by a goal in the last minute of the game, came through with Theron Wood tying it up to send it to a point-less overtime and finally a thrill-filled penalty kick round.
Justin Pierre, Warriors captain said it best. ‘The game was amazing, it was a pleasure to be a part of it; it really could have gone either way, and both teams gave everything they had.
‘The keepers were under constant pressure throughout the whole game because it was played at such a high pace. Theron’s goal with 40 seconds left in regulation was the goal of the night. I’m just glad we are through to the finals but what a game!’
Burger Owner and Team Representative Gary Rutty echoed the sentiments in saying it was ‘the best game of the season’ and praised all of the players’ talents.
As in any sport, it comes down to two teams, ready to play for all the marbles. Monday will see the test of two very large and very strong teams.
The RCC Strikers will look to polish their almost perfect season against the BrittHay Warriors in the title game. It’s been a season of records and this game is nothing short of being a story for the books.
