Rio Ferdinand launched a scathing attack on the England fans who booed team-mate Ashley Cole.
The left-back copped some serious stick after his howler lead to Kazakhstan scoring a shock goal at Wembley.
But skipper Ferdinand believes what Cole needed was some encouragement after the gaffe.
He said: ‘It’s disappointing when any player makes a mistake – you want to get behind him and gee him up so he gets back into the game.
‘I hope the people who’ve done that will feel a bit ashamed of themselves.’
England boss Fabio Capello could only agree with his captain.
The Italian said: ‘I don’t understand why the crowd boo one player – you have to help the players more when they make a mistake.’
Despite the 5-1 scoreline, stand-in skipper Ferdinand was quick to admit the performance was still short of the desired level.
