The Knackerfest rugby is returning for the Pirates Week schedule, the fifth year in succession.
The tournament, which is designed for players over 35, will see two locals teams compete against a Jamaican and a Dutch/Bahamian team.
The local teams are the national over 35s squad, aptly named the Tarnished Turtles, and RE/MAX’s Knackers.
Cayman’s teams currently boast about 60 players. This year has been extremely busy. The Tarnished Turtles toured to the Melrose 7s in Scotland in April and in the same month the national Cayman squad played at the World Cup qualifiers. They also went to Jamaica and won back the Gemini Cup.
The Knackerfest is another highlight of the year. The tournament runs during Pirates Week which gives the visiting teams a chance to enjoy this fantastic event at the same time.
‘The expanding numbers of girls, boys, women and men playing touch, 7 a side and 15 a side rugby, at the Cayman Rugby Football Union is a development RE/MAX Cayman Islands likes to support. The Knackerfest is an important part of that support,’ James Bovell, owner of RE/MAX Cayman Islands said. ‘The tournament is not a normal competition; it is intended for players who enjoy the sport, it’s about the camaraderie and friendship.’
Regular players in Knackerfest who have turned 60 include Derek Haines and Ron Arscott.
Tournament director Richard ‘Grizz’ Adams said: ‘This is a great opportunity for the older players who have enjoyed the game to renew friendships made over the years, to meet and greet new players and their families, and to promote the true spirit of the game of rugby outside of the competitive professional arena. We are delighted that RE/MAX shares in these international and community values.’
