One of Cayman’s best cyclists is in the midst of preparations for a busy period in the sport’s calendar.

Frenchman Jerome Ameline is currently training for the upcoming Turtle Tri. The triathlon is set to take place Saturday 23 November at Public Beach.
Ameline was part of the winning team from last year’s event. The other members of the Cayman-based team are swimmer Matthew Courtis and runner Russell Coleman.
As Ameline, 33, states his training has been about improving and getting more time on the bike.
‘I’m in full training right now and I’m cycling once or twice a day. It’s all about improving on the fact that I’ve had the best cycling time [in the Turtle Tri] four of the last five years.
‘I run a gym called Revolutions [Indoor Cycling] and see many people come in to train just because of the triathlon.’
The company, located in Barnett Music Centre beside the Red Cross, offers a variety of programs for the interested cyclist.
On Friday it hosted a two hour Halloween ride and will actually be part of the Pirates Week Float Parade this Saturday from 3-5pm.
This weekend he’ll also be racing against top professionals in a series of races in George Town.
Having the business allows Ameline to literally train on the job. And the results of Ameline’s efforts have shown.
He won the Cayman National 10 mile time-trial championships last month setting a new course record in the process.
Ameline was so fast that his time of 21:19 meant he travelled the 10 mile course at about 28 miles per hour.
In August Ameline finished fifth in a criterium race (which decides winners based on points earned at certain sections rather than who crosses the finish line first).
In June Ameline won the final race of the Cayman Classic annual five-race series. Overall he finished in second place.
With all of those accomplishments he remains a modest man and is quick to say it’s the competition he faces that brings the best out of him.
He says one of his secrets for success, especially with triathlons, is constant training, which he wholeheartedly recommends to everyone.
‘Here’s a tip for the Turtle Tri: get involved with the training races. They’re small runs, swims, and cycles that are perfect to train with. People get exposure to all three disciplines and that allows them to build up themselves.’
One of the last build-up races for the Turtle Tri will be this Sunday 9 November. As usual the race will take place at 7am at the Public Beach.
The distances on offer will be greater this time around than in previous races. The swim section is 500m (sprint) and 1,000m (Olympic), the bike portion is 15km and 30km and the run is 3.75km and 7.5km.
Ameline is bound to be out competing once again and will most likely tackle the Olympic distances.
In the end Ameline feels the Turtle Tri will be another chance for him to defy his age and do well.
‘I may be getting older but I think I’m definitely getting better.’
