Tropical Storm Paloma

Key messages:

A hurricane Warning was issued at 4:00pm for the Cayman Islands.

The storm has shifted and TS force winds may start to affect the Cayman Islands as early as 11 o’clock Friday morning (07 November).

Government offices will be closed tomorrow.

The following shelters on Grand Cayman will open at 8am tomorrow (Friday):

John A Cumber Primary School Hall

The five shelters just listed have emergency medical centres.

Breakers Community Hall will also open; however, it will not operate an EMC.

All of Grand Cayman’s shelters will be on stand-by and they will be opened if needed.

The RCIPS reports it is fully prepared and anyone taking advantage during the storm will be dealt with severely.

No mandatory evacuation order is in effect. Visitors who would like to leave should call their airline or Cayman Airways.

Storm effects will be experienced along the southern coast of Grand Cayman and the SMB area, and an announcement will be made soon by the Met office on expected wave heights and storm surge.

Tropical Storm Paloma will bring rain possibly through Monday morning, flooding already-saturated low-lying areas.

Advice to local population:

Residents should hurry to complete storm preparations tonight.

Since the storm is now forecast to come closer to Grand Cayman, HMCI recommends that houses be shuttered.

Residents should plan on staying home tomorrow and not going out.

All residents should continue to monitor their local media for updates on Tropical Storm Paloma.

At 4:00 this afternoon (Thursday, 07 November) Tropical Storm Paloma was located near 16.3 N 81.8 W or 210 miles south of Grand Cayman.

Paloma is moving north at 8 mph and is expected to turn northeast. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.
