Grand Cayman is collectively holding its breath with Dave Martins and the rest of the Pirates Week Committee.
There’s a full slate of activities beginning today with the East End Heritage Day through the weekend.
The bulk of activity will be held tomorrow with the Landing Pageant, Float Parade, Costume Competition, Trial of the Pirates and other activities on the waterfront in George Town.
We’re all holding our breath because these same activities were planned for last week, but they were pummelled by Paloma.
The Pirates Week Committee members in their wisdom met last Thursday morning and postponed the events, knowing full well that the least Hurricane Paloma was going to do to Grand Cayman was drench the main island with rain.
No one wanted to think about the worst she could do. Unfortunately our family and friends on Cayman Brac realised Paloma’s worst.
Because of the extensive damage to that Island, its Heritage Day has been postponed indefinitely until, hopefully, sometime in January.
Grand Cayman needs to keep our Sister Islands in mind this weekend as we revel in all that is Pirates Week.
Pirates Week has immensely evolved over the years bringing in more money to our coffers than ever.
As it has evolved we have made some new traditions and done away with some of those that didn’t seem to quite fit in.
One tradition we would like to see reinstated – all in fun mind you – is the capture and caging of the ersatz governor as the pirates land.
When the Trial of the Pirates is held, we’d like to see Judge Alexander Henderson sitting on the bench. This time the pirates might just be allowed to stay.
We do hope that the rain stays away from Pirates Week activities this weekend and that everyone has a safe and fun time.
Remember not to drink and drive because even though many of our police are helping out on Cayman Brac, there will be plenty out in force on Grand Cayman enforcing the laws.
Have fun, be safe and happy Pirates Week!
