A Caymanian basketball player is doing well in the sport in England.
Corey Thompson plays for the Southampton Blazers, a semi-professional team in the England Basketball League.
The Blazers play in the South conference of the Division Three Men’s League.
His last three games saw him score 21, 19 and 16 points respectively. His team won two out of the three matches.
In the first match Thompson’s team lost by nine points to Welsh side Glamorgan Gladiators. Thompson’s total was a fourth of the team’s 80 points on the night.
The Gladiators are fifth in the league with a 5-4 record and are four games out of first place.
In the second match Thompson’s side barely beat league also-rans London Westside 83-77.
Thompson was a key figure in the game posting 12 points in the last 2 minutes and 45 seconds of the game. His fourth quarter production brought the team back from an 8-point deficit for the win.
In the third match, which was played last Saturday, Thompson was described by the English media as a force in the paint and his interior presence led to a 94-53 win over winless Guilford Heat II.
The Blazers are currently ranked eighth in the 13 team conference with a 4-4 record. The squad has been a decent defensive side allowing 531 points. But they’ve struggled to score as they have netted a mediocre 542 points.
Their next game will be on 29 November against Oxford Brookes University, who are one spot ahead of them in the rankings.
Thompson has had some injury problems this season, particularly with a sore ankle.
He said the games were part of a comeback he’s making to the sport.
‘My first game back [against Glamorgan] was a good game right until the end. I was not 100 per cent for the game. I only had one training session to prepare because I was recovering from a sprain ankle.
‘My ankle has been holding me back a bit even up to now and the cold weather is not making it any better.
‘In my second game I had a much better game fitness-wise.’
