Customs seize guns cache

A 20-year old Spotts man faced court Thursday after police and customs officials seized a cache of guns, ammunition and ammunition magazines hidden in a fridge being imported into Cayman from the USA.

Michael Timothy Ebanks, of Raven Avenue, Spotts, has been in custody since 13 November after customs officers seized five handguns, magazines for a MAC-10 submachine gun and an AK rifle and a ‘large quantity of ammunition’.

The court heard that an unnamed female, listed as the importer on customs documents, had first come to collect the fridge at the Customs Distribution Centre. But Ebanks later came to the centre and told officers the fridge belonged to him.

Officers then took him to witness a search of it, the court heard, at which point they found the pistols, magazines and ammunition concealed inside the panels of the fridge’s door

Among the pistols recovered in the search was a .45 LC/10 410 GA Taurus; a 915 Smith and Wesson; a Tiger Titan; a SW40 VE Smith and Wesson; and a L380 Lorcin.

Chief Magistrate Margaret Ramsay-Hale remanded Ebanks in custody at Northward Prison, and ordered that he be returned to the Summary Court on 17 December for another mention hearing.

No further details of the firearm seizure were read in court, although a number of customs officials were on hand for the brief mention hearing.

Ebanks was represented by Defence Attorney Ben Tonner during his appearance Thursday.
