New Year’s Day will be a musical one for the Filipino community this year when competitors for the third annual Pinoy Idol take the stasge..
Pinoy Idol is a singing competition that awards cash prizes to the top five competitors.
Filipino bands will provide intermission entertainment. Bands will include popular acts such as Five of Hearts and Liquid Sky and possibly the recently reunited Asya.
Event organiser Michael Manaog is excited about the event.
‘This annual event was started by Mr. Pie Ocampo three years ago,’ said Mr. Manaog. ‘By popular demand from the Filipino community we decided to continue the tradition this year [despite] his absence.’
Mr. Manaog added that the event is hugely popular from year to year. ‘The usual attendance is around 1,000 to 1,500 people in the crowd. We call this event the biggest annual Filipino event.’
The winner of the event will walk away with $1,500. Second prize will win $1,000 and third will win $500. Fourth and fifth prize winners will leave with $300 each.
The event will be held at the Lions Centre and the Idol competition will run from 8pm to 12am.
The event is not just for Filipinos to enjoy, either.
‘Everybody on island is welcome to join and witness the fun,’ emphasised Mr. Manaog.
Following the competition, from 12am to 2am, will be a traditional Filipino New Year’s party.
Tickets are CI$10 and are available from Funky Tangs and contestants and organisers.
