Cayman Olympian Shaune Fraser was awarded SEC male swimmer of the week honours on Tuesday. It is the first time this season that Fraser has been named the SEC male swimmer of the week.
Fraser, who swims for the University of Florida, was awarded the honour for his performances in the Dallas Morning News Classic, where he led the Gators to second place against a field that included six top-25 swimming programmes.
He won the 200-yard butterfly competition, with his time of 1:44.56 marking the fastest time for Florida this season. It is also the third-best time in the SEC for the 2008-2009 season.
Florida also took the 400 yard medley relay, with Fraser swimming the buttterfly leg in both the 400 and 800 yard medley relays.
Not content with excellent performances in the butterfly, Fraser also claimed third in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.44 seconds.
He also helped the team to a second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as well as setting a season’s best 1:35.53 in the leadoff leg of the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay.
Fraser was not the only swimmer from his team to garner SEC honours this week, with Shara Stafford claiming the women’s freshman of the year honour, and Gemma Spofforth claiming female swimmer of the year honours.
