Basketball lovers should be all smiles.
This weekend will see a number of games on the local scene.
All of the action gets going tomorrow with the opening of the PWC U16 Boys and Girls League.
The league, which was geared to the U15 age group last year, sees its opening ceremony at 6pm at the CIBA Court off Eastern Avenue.
All eyes are slated to be on last year’s champions. For the boys it was Assassins who were lead by star player Alex Ebanks while for the girls it was Mystics under the guidance of coaches Dionne Anglin and Ellen Downey.
Last year saw four teams in each league. Aside from Assassins the boys saw the Warriors, Ball-aholics and 345 Ballers. For the girls Mystics were joined by the Comets, Sparks and the Monarchs.
The league has a history of grooming solid young talent. Last year saw stand-out U19 Boys League Brandon Glasgow play for Ball-aholics in the league.
Glasgow starred for Esso Blazers this year as they won the U19 Boys League title. He is set to play in the national men’s league starting this month.
In addition top U19 Girls League scorer Felecia Connor got her start with the Comets.
Connor would stay with the Comets as she played on the U19 team. She later played with Welly’s Cool Spot in the national women’s league.
From there the men’s league gets in full swing. Division one sees two games on Sunday. At 6:15pm Esso Blazers take on team Colombia before DHL Wolves take on George Town Sports Club at 7:50pm.
Esso will look to rebound from a huge 64-38 loss to Wolves in the season opener last Sunday.
Wolves meanwhile hope the momentum from their win over Esso continues. Dwight O’Garro had a solid debut for Wolves, especially on the boards.
He’ll need to play well again, along with mainstays Gary ‘Butcher’ McLaughlin and Captain Andres Kirchman.
Division two then has two games on Monday. Michael Burbidge and Digicel Broadband (formerly the Demons) battle Michael Blackburn and Future Sports Club at 6:15pm before Odell Smith and the Rock Hole Fyah Ants take on Bruce Thompson and Esso Blazers B at 7:50pm.
