Despite seeming far away, the 2010 Cayman Arts Festival is fast approaching, and this always means good news for its supporters, as opportunities to attend one of its popular Music on the Menu fundraising events increase.
Artistic Director for the Cayman Arts Festival, Glen Inanga, headlines the events, wowing audiences with his piano skills.
The next of these events takes place at 7 Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, on Tuesday, 28 April at 6.30pm. The event will start with a cocktail reception followed by live performances starting at 7pm. Tickets include a three-course meal and, of course, entertainment offered by Mr. Inanga and, singing on four of the works performed that evening, Tommy Williams, a counter-tenor.
‘7 Manager Bertrand Daluzeau and Chef Anthony Le Pape will provide a gourmet repast featuring entrees of prime filet mignon, grilled king salmon or a delicious vegetable curry accompanied by fine wines,’ said event organiser and volunteer with Cayman Arts Festival Gaye Randolph.
‘After being spellbound by Glen Inanga’s magical performance at the first Music on the Menu on 25 March at Luca, attendees were clamouring for a repeat performance,’ she explained.
Opening the performances will be Francella Martin on flute and Rochelle Parchment singing. Ms Martin is a student at Cayman Prep and High School, who has been playing the flute since the age of eight. She was the youngest finalist, at 10 years of age, in the inaugural 2008 Young Musician of the Year competition held in Cayman. She studies with Louise Price and has just taken her Grade 5 Trinity Guildhall examination.
Ms Parchment is finishing her Associate Degree in Literary Arts at the University College of the Cayman Islands and works closely with Mr. Inanga. Her background singing in church has been instrumental in her efforts to develop her repertoire in preparation for the Bachelor of Music degree in jazz which she wishes to study at one of the music colleges in London.
Mr. Inanga graduated from Clare College at University of Cambridge in England, where he studied Engineering. Following graduation he studied with Martin Roscoe at the Royal Academy of Music, and holds the Masters in Music degree from the University of London, with a distinction in Piano Performance. He was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2003 and is a senior lecturer at UCCI where he established the music programme in April 2007.
Mr. Inanga co-founded the Cayman Arts Festival with Jennifer Micallef, who also performs with him in a piano duo partnership. The pair is regularly broadcasted on BBC’s Radio 3 and their latest disc was selected as Record of the Month and Editor’s Choice in Gramophone Magazine in February 2003.
Mr. Williams began his career in music as a chorister at Ripon Cathedral and Tewkesbury Abbey before winning a music scholarship to Malvern College. He was then awarded a choral scholarship to St. John’s College in Cambridge.
He has sung with orchestras including the English Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
The night’s programme includes Chopin’s Polonaise in C sharp minor (Opus 26, no. 1), Mozart’s Variations on ‘Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman’ and Debussy’s Clair de Lune and Toccata.
Mr. Williams will join Mr. Inanga for Handel’s Ombra mai fu and Verdi Prati, Purcell’s Sweeter than Roses and Mozart’s Ah, di sil nobil alma.
The Cayman Arts Festival was a vision of Mr. Inanga’s and Ms Micallef’s back in 2002. Aiming to create something special for those living in the Cayman Islands, the Festival was launched in February 2004.
Held biannually, the Arts Festival aims to collaborate with visiting and local artists alike, leading to a vibrant and diverse musical festival unlike any other produced on island.
‘The central aim of Cayman Arts Festival is education, one of the objectives being to challenge young Caymanians to strive towards excellence,’ said a press release issued by the Festival.
‘The visiting performers go into the schools island-wide, giving master classes and educational workshops.’
