So much squashed in

The 2009 Cayman Squash opens is less than a week away, and the organisers are focusing on how to ensure anyone can see the world’s best players for free.

Seven of the world’s top 10 female players will be playing in the Cayman Open, along with the three best male players from the Caribbean. The event runs from May 5-10.

The tournament has been organised so that every day there will be free matches for the viewing public.

Tournament Director Dan Kneipp explained how anyone can watch the matches.

‘Massive Equipment Rental have set up a huge cinema-style projector for spectators,’ he said. ‘During the tournament we’ll have a high definition camera set up on the main show court, broadcasting it on Massive’s projector and televisions around the club.

‘We’ve sold 100 per cent of our seats for the main show court for the evening matches, but this way people can still come to the club for free and watch the tournament on the big screen.

‘You’ll get the atmosphere, you’ll see some of the show court and you’ll get to follow all of the action. And we’re not selling any seats for the daytime matches – anyone can come and watch for free – there will be no designated seats, whoever comes first will get the prime seats.”

The tournament starts on Tuesday, May 5, with four free matches open to the viewing public starting at 12:00 and running until around 2pm. There will be free viewing every day, with Thursday, May 7 being the busiest with six free matches starting at midday.

‘We wanted to ensure that it was possible for any Caymanians and Cayman residents to come down to South Sound Squash Club and watch the world’s best play,’ Kneipp said.

‘The free matches on Thursday during the day include the Nos.2, 3, 4, 8 and 10 in the world. And then for the evening matches anyone can come to the club for free and watch on the big screen as the world No.1 plays, and Cayman’s top player Marlene West plays the World No.5.’

The Cayman Open is sponsored by the Ministry of Sport, BDO, Maples, Massive, Sunshine Suites, Cayman Financial Review, Lime, Dunlop and the Department of Tourism. More details are available at www.caribbeansquash.com
