The Cayman Islands Golf Association has determined the golfers that will represent the Cayman Islands at the XIII NatWest Island Games next month.
It’s being held in Aland, near Finland on June 27-July 4.
The men’s team is Robert Chilman, Robert Woods and Tracy Moore, these being the three qualifiers based on their scores from the four rounds played over January through April, and Johnny Widmer on the Colorado University golf team, who was selected by the CIGA Committee.
These four will compete against golfers from 23 of the 25 Island Games members for team and individual gold, silver and bronze medals. The team competition is the best three of four daily scores over the four rounds, while the individual competition is the player’s total gross score for the four rounds.
The CIGA Committee selected Samantha Widmer, the current CIGA Ladies Champion and leading qualifier for the upcoming Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships. She will compete at the Island Games in the Ladies Individual competition.
CIGA Team Manager for the Island Games Bob Slatter has been working with the Cayman Island Games Association in planning for this tournament, held every two years amongst the 25 island members, the criteria being that the islands population should not exceed 100,000.
‘Being part of a team of some 100 from the Cayman Islands going to an event with over 2,500 participants is an exciting challenge and the assistance and guidance of the Association has been much appreciated,’ said Slatter.
‘While golfers from Cayman have gone to previous Island Games, this is the first time that the players have been determined from a qualifying process. This has resulted in a very competitive team and I feel we have a good chance of returning with team and individual medals.’
All of the players will be continuing their efforts to qualify for the golf teams going to the 53rd Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships being held in the Turks and Caicos Islands August 2/9. The final two qualifying rounds are May 9/10 at the NCB Homes 17th Cayman Islands Amateur Golf Championships at the North Sound Club.
