Bayfield’s locked in for dinner

Cayman rugby’s kudos will go up several notches next month with the visit of former England and Lions lock Martin Bayfield.,

He will be here as the Cayman Islands Rugby Football Union.

Bayfiled, 42, will be the guest speaker of the CRFU mixed dinner dance for 2009 to be held at the Island Air Hangar on 12 June.

Bayfield played for Northampton Saints, Bedford Blues and England, gaining 31 England and three Lions caps.

The 6ft 9in tall police officer made his England debut in 1991, and although he was omitted from the 1991 World Cup squad, was a part of the 1992 Five Nations Grand Slam winning side. He went on the 1993 British Lions Tour to New Zealand and was part of the 1995 World Cups squad. He played 18 times partnering Martin Johnson.

His final appearance for England came in the 1996 Five Nations match against Wales.

His last game was against Gloucester in February 1998, a neck injury sustained in training a few days later forced him to retire.

Since retirement, Bayfield has worked as a journalist, an after dinner speaker and has since appeared in the Harry Potter films playing the half-giant Hagrid.

Rugby media correspondent Pete De Vere said: ‘Martin Bayfield is currently recognised in the rugby world as the best after dinner speaker on the circuit. Martin’s pending arrival, on the heels of Rory Lawson’s visit to our club is surely yet another sign of the quality which Cayman rugby and the Cayman Islands attract.

‘With Martin’s stellar reputation he should be a great follow on from last year’s honoured guest Gavin Hastings.

‘This has been a great year for Cayman rugby thanks to our juniors’ success in reaching the JRWT in Kenya so this dinner should be a wonderful celebration.’

Anyone interested in attending the dinner and hearing Bayfield speak on all things Rugby should contact Dave Hoptroff on [email protected].

Tables of ten are CI$1400 and individual tickets are $140. There is a maximum of 300 places available on a first come first served basis.
