Tiger purrs over show

World class bodybuilding makes a welcome return next week.

It’s at the Lions Centre on June 20 and the event is the Cayman Islands IFPA/ NANBF Pro/Am Universe Muscle Classic Bodybuilding and Figure Championships.

These international championships are promoted annually by Eye of the Tiger Productions, with an aim of building awareness of the sport within the community, to expose local athletes to international competition and to give them an opportunity to win pro cards.

The championships also attract many first time visitors to the island and therefore boosts sports tourism.

Event promoter, Tiger Wilson, himself a WNBF Pro Mr. Universe Champion, said that throughout the six years since he has been promoting these championships, the Cayman Islands and its athletes have received great exposure in various international bodybuilding and fitness magazines, as well as on various natural bodybuilding web-sites and some of them have also achieved their professional cards.

These championships should prove to be very interesting because of the high calibre of international athletes arriving. So far entries have been received from competitors in various US states, as well as from Nigeria, Dominican Republic, Canada, Jamaica, England and of course the Cayman Islands.

Some of the competitors at the championship include Darren Vernon from England who has won several world titles, Yenny Polanco from the Dominican Republic who has several titles including the 2009 IFPA Pro Bowl Figure championship and Christina Comparato of the USA who recently won the 2009 Pro Bowl Bodybuilding title.

All athletes are fully drug tested before and after the event to ensure that they are 100 per cent drug free.

Prejudging of competitors will begin at 10am sharp (gate opens at 9am) and tickets cost $15. The event finals will begin at 7pm (gate opens at 6pm) and the cost of tickets is $25.

Wilson said: ‘I really wish to thank our sponsors, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Department of Tourism, The Ministry of Sports, Chris Johnson Associates, Island Paving, Webster’s Tours, Western Union, Hot 104.1FM, Radio Cayman and Vibe 98.9FM, as well as all others who have assisted in any way.

‘The Cayman Islands Under-23 national Football Team will be selling food and drinks at the championships in their effort to raise funds to assist them to travel to Cleveland, Ohio to participate in a tournament, so I encourage everyone to come out and give their support.

‘Additional sponsors are still being sought and anyone who is interested in either becoming a sponsor or in making a donation towards the success of the event, are asked to call 916 5662 or 916 5191 or e-mail: [email protected].’
