Olympic day

Local athletes get a unique chance for an Olympic experience next week.

Everyone in the Cayman Islands can be part of the 2009 Olympic Day celebrations.

A major activity is the annual Olympic Day Run/Walk from the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, a 5k jaunt on Sunday, 21 June, at 5pm.

Entry is free, and all those present will also receive an event shirt, a certificate of participation,refreshments,and opportunities for performance
awards and a large number of random prizes.

More than 100 nationalities are represented in the Cayman Islands, and runners and walkers are invited to promote the spirit of Olympism with costumes, flags or symbols of their particular countries.

Registration prior to race day is encouraged and may be accomplished online through www.caymanactive.com/olympic.

For additional information, call Jerry Harper at 945-3970. Event day registration is possible at the Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Centre in the Truman Bodden Sports Complex from 4:00-4:45pm.

The International Olympic Committee has expanded the concept of the Olympic Day Run to increase awareness of sports by encouraging other
activities.

In the Cayman Islands this year, associations offering events include boxing, bodybuilding, table tennis, sailing, swimming, gymnastics and cycling.
