Local hoopsters ready to play

The 2009 Island Games start this weekend.

Cayman will be one of the countries at the games in Aland, near Finland fielding teams in a number of sporting disciplines.

One of those is basketball. Traditionally Cayman has been strong in the sport, medalling in many games and is always one of the favourites to win it all.

Local hoopsters have been in serious training most of the year to make the team, coached this year by Daniel Augustine.

The final roster is now set and sees a number of notable faces. The following are the list of players on the team: Collin Anglin, Phillip Barnes, Omari Corbin, Chad Leslie, Adam Milburn, Jerome Narcisse, Dwight, Sammy and Shaad O’Garro, Lloyd Samuels, Cory Thompson and Rotando Thompson.

Among the staff surrounding Coach Augustine are technical director Victor ‘Voot’ O’Garro and manager Angela O’Garro.

The Cayman team leaves Wednesday with the official opening of the games on Saturday. Cayman’s first two matches are against Bermuda on Sunday and Jersey next Tuesday.

As Coach Augustine states the team is ready for the upcoming challenge.

‘I feel confident that the team is ready to accomplish the goals set. After participating in the last seven games, our goal right now is to make it to the semis with the ultimate goal being a gold medal.

‘Execution on a whole is a big thing for our guys. If we don’t execute we won’t get anywhere.’
