Hoopsters head indoors tonight

Tonight sees local basketball make its long awaited shift indoors.

The first games of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association Indoor League are on at the Arts and Recreation Center.

The Center is located on the grounds of Cayman International School at Camana Bay.

Games go off at 6:30 and 7:30pm and feature some familiar faces as well as some new ones.

Local men’s league stalwart Shaolin goes into action first against new squad Mattyssports.com.

The majority of the Shaolin squad that competed in the national league is slated to be playing indoors including Collin Anglin and Omari Corbin.

At this point their competitors (who are uniform suppliers) are a complete unknown. Time will tell how sporty they really are.

From there comes an epic encounter as the Wolves take on the Esso Blazers. The game is sort of a rematch of this year’s national league finals, which the Wolves won in three straight games.

The Wolves were coached by Duran ‘Trini’ Whittaker. Tonight Whittaker resumes his coaching duties and is looking forward to the games.

‘I’ve never coached indoors. But we have a good group of guys. We should have a lot of fun.’

Expected to lead the charge for the Wolves is star big men Dwight O’Garro and Andres Kirchman along with mainstay Gary ‘Butcher’ McLaughlin.

The Blazers are slated to counter with the likes of Rotando Thompson, Perry Levy and Morgan Bodden.

All of those games are part of division one of the league, which consists of those four teams.

Division two of the league gets under way on Thursday and sees Digicel Broadband against DBI Warriors at 6:30pm before CI Precast takes on Beer Trouble at 7:30pm. The four teams mentioned constitute division two.

Both divisions will also play on Sunday with division one in action at 4pm and 6pm while division two plays at 5pm and 7pm.
